《G4-005【英文轉折語】一次弄懂而且、另外轉折語，英文寫作更加分！》學到可以取代對等連接詞and，作為轉折語用的副詞或副詞片語，《G4-007【英文轉折語】但是、然而、可是英文怎麼用？but, however, nevertheless, nonetheless一次學會》談到可以替代對等連接詞but的副詞或副詞片語，把它們當轉折語用。那麼有什麼副詞或副詞片語可以替代對等連接詞so，表達「因此」、「所以」的意思，好讓接在後面的句子表達出一個結果呢？這類的轉折語整理如下（越往下排表示正式度越高）：

因此、所以轉折語放在句首時的用法

so是個對等連接詞，可以直接用來連接兩個英文句子，而這些當轉折語用的副詞或副詞片語用來放在第二個英文句子的句首，來連接兩個英文句子時，跟so有哪裡不一樣呢？

有什麼大小寫或是標點符號要注意的地方呢？我們用例句來說明一下。

假設今天要表達 「目前進展不錯，因此我們有信心會如期完成工作。」

  • 使用對等連接詞so: 

    E.g.: Progress has been very good so far, so we are confident that the work will be completed on time. 

  • 使用以上的副詞或副詞片語：

    (1) 第一句話寫完後句點。寫出這些轉折語之一(記得第一個字母要大寫），寫完後逗點，再接第二個句子。 

    E.g.: Progress has been very good so far. For this reason/ Therefore/ As a result/ Accordingly/ Thus/ Hence/ Consequently/ As a consequence/ In consequence, we are confident that the work will be completed on time. 

    提醒：Thus/ Hence後面的逗點常省略

    (2) 第一句話寫完後逗點，加上and後再寫出這些轉折語之一，寫完後逗點大多可有可無，最後再接第二句話。

    E.g.: Progress has been very good so far, and for this reason/ therefore/ as a result/ accordingly/ thus/ hence/ consequently/ as a consequence/ in consequence (,) we are confident that the work will be completed on time. 

    (3) 第一句話寫完上分號(;)，寫出這些轉折語之一，寫完後的逗點大多可有可無，最後再接上第二句話。簡單說，就是把寫法(2)中的「 , and」直些換成 「;」。

    E.g.: Progress has been very good so far; for this reason/ therefore/ as a result/ accordingly/ thus/ hence/ consequently/ as a consequence/ in consequence (,) we are confident that the work will be completed on time. 

    提醒：Thus前面也有可能直接逗點，不是分號

從以上的例句可以看出來這些副詞或副詞片語當作轉折語使用時，都是放在第二個句子的句首。但其實它們除了放一個句子的句首外，有些還能放在一個句子的句中或句尾來使用。
 

可以放在句中使用的因此、所以轉折語
 

上面轉折語可以放在一個英文句子的句中來使用的有：therefore, accordingly, thus, hence, consequently, as a consequence, in consequence

E.g.: His car is bigger and therefore more comfortable. 

「他的車比較大，因此比較舒服。」

E.g.: This man was accordingly arrested and taken to a police station nearby. 

「因此這男人被逮捕，並帶到附近的警察局。」

E.g.: They planned to reduce staff and thus to lower costs. 

「他們計劃裁減員工，進而減少成本。」

E.g.: We might hence judge that Mozart really died at around 120 years old. 

「我們可能因此推敲出來，莫札特真的是120歲左右去世的。」

E.g.: The molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream and consequently affect the organs. 

「這些分子被吸收到血流裡，因此影響到器官。」

E.g.: The implication is that the world will inevitably, as a consequence, become unfamiliar to us. 

「其影響就是這世界無法避免地因此變成我們不熟悉的模樣。」

E.g.: She forgot to set her alarm, and in consequence, she overslept and was late for her morning meeting.

「她忘記設鬧鐘，因此她睡過頭，早上的會議遲到了．」

另外，thus和hence放在句中使用時，還有特別的固定用法唷

  • , thus + Ving 「因此」 、「如此一來」= in this way

    E.g.: They diluted the drug, thus reducing its effectiveness. 

    「他們稀釋這藥，如此一來減低了它的藥效。」

  • , (and) hence + N 「因此有...」

    E.g.: A better working environment improves people’s performance, (and) hence productivity. 

    「比較好的工作環境讓人們表現更好，因此更有生產力。」


可以放在句尾使用的因此、所以轉折語
 

上面有些轉折語則是可以放在一個英文句子的句尾來使用，例如as a result跟 as a consequence

E.g.: He defeated all the competitors and won the championship as a result. 「他擊敗所有的競爭者，因此贏得冠軍。」

E.g.: I got a bad blood transfusion and I got a liver disease as a consequence. 

「我輸血不良，因此得了肝病。」

提醒：accordingly跟hence也可用在句尾，但不是用來表達「因此」、「所以」的意思，故不在本文討論範圍中。
